March is GRIN Awareness Disorder Month!

Posted in Blog, Charity

March isn’t just the first month of Spring, it is also GRIN Awareness Month. Together with GRIN Europe EMG is partnering up in spreading awareness for GRIN disorders in March.

On the days corresponding to the chromosomes that cause the various GRIN disorders, we celebrate the amazing GRIN children and their families and we endeavor to spread awareness about GRIN disorders.

Schedule

We will actually kick off GRIN Awareness Month on February 29, which is already recognized as International Rare Disease Day.

We then follow up on:

  • March 4, (chromosome 4) with GRIN2
  • March 5, (chromosome 5) with GRIN1
  • March 6, (chromosome 6) with GRIN2
  • March 9, (chromosome 9) with GRIN1
  • March 10, (chromosome 10) with GRIN3
  • March 11, (chromosome 11) with GRIN4
  • March 12, (chromosome 12) with GRIN2B
  • March 16, (chromosome 16) with GRIN2A
  • March 19, (chromosome 19) with GRIN2D

What are GRIN disorders?

GRIN Disorders are part of a larger family of genetic diseases related to ionotropic glutamate receptors. These receptors play an important role in learning and memory as well as other critical biological functions.

The most important symptoms of GRIN disorders include developmental delays and intellectual disability, epilepsy, autism, sleep issues, gastro intestinal issues, cortical visual impairment, low or high muscletone or a combination of both and so called neuro storms. In addition, many GRI children are not verbal, not mobile and need parental assistance 24/7.
