Hiring a highly skilled migrant

Posted in Blog, Highly skilled migrants, Recognized sponsorship

Attracting top talent is a key challenge for companies today, both domestically and internationally. With the rise of a global workforce and shifting demographics, many organizations are turning to hiring highly skilled migrants as a solution.

However, it’s important to navigate the laws and regulations surrounding this process effectively.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits and considerations of hiring highly skilled migrants, as well as the steps to becoming a recognized sponsor and the solutions offered by Executive Mobility Group (EMG).

‘’The War for Talent’’

The current labor market is highly competitive, with a shortage of skilled workers in many industries. This has led to a so-called “War for Talent”, as companies both domestic and international vie for top talent. The demand is particularly high in industries such as technology and business services, where highly skilled workers are in high demand. With the increasing mobility of the workforce, companies are looking beyond their national borders to find the talent they need to succeed.”

Hiring a highly skilled migrant – What to look out for?

When it comes to finding top talent, companies should not limit themselves to their own national borders. While hiring international employees can bring numerous opportunities, it also presents its own set of challenges. It’s important to keep in mind that hiring employees from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland requires compliance with various laws and regulations.

The Netherlands is a prime destination for highly skilled migrants, with a thriving business environment and favorable terms of employment. However, non-European employees will need a work permit or residence permit to work in the Netherlands, and a sponsor must be involved in the process. This is where companies may face challenges and that’s where organizations like Executive Mobility Group (EMG) come in, to assist them with the entire process.

The chances of recognized sponsorship

A sponsor is a person or organization that has an interest in a migrant coming to live and/or work in the Netherlands. A natural person can be a sponsor for a family member and an organization for a foreign employee.

If you want to hire a highly skilled migrant, both temporarily and for the long term, your organization must have the official status of a recognized sponsor. The application for this goes through the IND (Immigration and Naturalization Service).

Our Customer Solutions Manager, Nathalie Crivello, says about this: “Recognised sponsors are organizations that the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) considers to be reliable partners.”

There are several advantages of being recognized as a sponsor by the IND:

  • Faster processing of permit applications
  • Fewer supporting documents are needed to get applications approved

Limitless solutions

The process of hiring highly skilled migrants can be lengthy, ranging from a few weeks to several months. If your organization is looking for a specific team member quickly, this can be a lot of time that you cannot afford to lose. EMG offers a practical solution for this situation.

Employment en payrolling services

EMG is itself a recognized sponsor, which allows us to offer useful EOR (Employer of Record) and Payrolling services. This is interesting for companies that:

  • Are not yet a recognized sponsor and are unable to wait for recognition when hiring a highly skilled migrant
  • Do not yet have an establishment in the Netherlands
  • Are not yet equipped to comply with the legal obligations regarding being a recognized sponsor

In this case, EMG will operate as a recognized sponsor for the highly skilled migrant(s) of your organisation. The benefits of this include:

  • The employee in question can start to work faster
  • Unburdening with the application for the recognized sponsorship
  • Onboarding session: ”What does it mean to be a recognized sponsor?”
  • Possession of all relevant knowledge
  • Consultancy in the field of compliance

In addition, as a global mobility partner, we can take care of other matters related to living and working. Think of the registration of your employees, financial affairs, housing and tax issues.

It is important to note that as a recognized sponsor you must comply with a number of legal obligations, such as a duty of care, an obligation to keep records and an obligation to provide information.

The IND is active in checking recognized sponsors and conducts weekly inspection visits to companies established in the Netherlands. As a partner, we can advise you in this and ensure that you and your team are aware of all current information.
